100W Folding Solar Panel:  Summer of 2017 and found it to be exceptionally good quality and remarkably efficient

I purchased this product in Summer of 2017 and found it to be exceptionally good quality and remarkably efficient. I have mobility issues which meant that I am not able to use the aluminium framed conventional folding suitcase panels as they are far too heavy.

This product is a real game changer! Weighing under 4kgs it is easily transportable and can be easily moved once set up (the set up is extraordinarily easy - unfold and plug in basically). I use it with a MPPT controller to further maximise its efficiency. This has allowed me to camp off-grid in my camper van (no longer tied to electric hookup sites and save on campsite fees).

The panel  charge consistently floats at anywhere between 13.7v and 14.1v and keeps my leisure battery fully topped up. I am able to run my Waeco CR50 fridge on high, run electrical appliances via an inverter and use 12V TV and lighting, all whilst keeping my leisure battery fully charged. Had there been the 160w panel available last year I would have bought this as I'm sure it would help with the cloudier climates here in the UK.

I cannot recommend this product enough. It keeps my leisure battery fully topped up on a sunny day (and overcast as well). You do need to adjust the position of the panel occasionally to maximise efficiency, but this is so easily done! I also have to say that the customer service team at LenSun are awesome! Alice in particular has been superb at providing assistance. This is one of those rare products that really does what it is advertised to do!

Lensun 160W Folding Solar Panel:  An awesome piece of kit!

Lensun-160W-Folding-ETFE-Solar-panel-flexible-lightweight-adjustable-mounting-brakets

In early 2018, I upgraded from the 100w ultralight folding solar panel which had served me exceptionally well over the summer of 2017, to this 160w ultralight folding solar panel. The reason for the upgrade was that I wanted a panel that could perform throughout the year and felt that 100w may not be sufficient for late autumn and early spring camping trips lacking in sunshine.

The panel was delivery exceptionally quickly – within 24hrs of ordering. Unpacking the panel is very simple and uncomplicated; simply open the box and there it is! I have a MPPT solar controller installed already so this solar panel was simple to plug in and use. I did also need to buy some MC4 solar extension leads to, as these are not included in the box.   There are no instructions included with the solar panel, but this was no problem as I was familiar with the product. However, if you needed instructions, this may be a problem, particularly if you opted for a panel with a built in controller. (Previous purchase of 100w panel also did not include instructions). You can email Lensun and they will send you PDF instructions.

The only real difference between this product and the 100w panel is the weight, which is approximately 1.2 kg heavier (5.3kg in total) and the extra 60w. The 100w has 3 folding sections and the 160w has 4 slightly larger folding sections.

The legs to hold the panel in place are a significant upgrade from the 100w model. The 100w model legs are aluminium and use a screw system to erect and were somewhat lightweight and lower quality. The 160w panel has Velcro attached legs that are built into the panel and maintain the optimum angle for efficiency. Much better!

I tested the 160w panel over the UK Easter 2018 break. The weather was not great and mostly overcast with intermittent rain (see photo). However, even in this overcast weather the panel still provided a charge at 13.4v. When the sun shone, the charge increased to 14.4w.

I opted to test the panel on a campsite with electric hook-up so that if I were not able to get sufficient charge from the panel, I would not be without power. However, even in cloudy and overcast weather, the Lensun 160w ultralight folding panel provided sufficient charge to keep my leisure battery fully charged, without the need to use the campsite’s electric hook-up.

It was unbelievable that the panel performed this well, but it did! It has given me the confidence to know that I am now free to explore campsites that do not have electric hook-up, because I can rely on this solar panel to keep my leisure battery fully charged, run my Waeco CR50 fridge, TV and charge my electrical devices! Most importantly it allows me to keep my beers cold!

On first consideration, the panel may seem expensive in comparison to other panels of similar performance, but these typically weigh around 12-14kg. The 160w ultralight panel from Lensun weighs around 5.3kg, which makes it much easier to transport around and move when in use – all solar panels need to be rotated to face the sun at various intervals throughout the day. The lightweight nature of this product makes that much easier to do than a heavier panel.

All in all, I highly recommend this panel as it gives me the independence I need to solo camp without struggling with the weight of a conventional folding solar panel. So the premium on the price, for being lightweight, is more than worth it when one considers the convenience and efficiency of the product.
